ALAMO
CITY ROLLERGIRLS ANSWER THE CALL TO SERVICE

Local roller derby league raising funds and skating in the MS Walk San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO , TX February 9, 2007 The Alamo City Rollergirls (ACRG) have registered as an organization for the upcoming MS Walk San Antonio presented by H-E-B and AT&T. The event will take place on March 3, 2007 at the AT&T Center and will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Lone Star Chapter. To date, the league has 12 members registered to participate, and they have achieved 75% of their fundraising goal of $500.

This cause hits close to home for the Alamo City Rollergirls, as one of their league members was diagnosed with MS twelve years ago. Although Teri “Pain Jane” Garcia has been diagnosed with this disease, she hasn’t let it slow her down. She works full-time as a Counselor at John Jay High School and plays the highly competitive contact sport of roller derby on the Dragon Divas team for the Alamo City Rollergirls. She also enjoys running, cycling and yoga to stay fit and healthy. When asked what motivates Teri to remain so active, she responds, “I ride, skate, run, and walk because I can. It's that simple. The fact that my body is capable is reason enough to celebrate.”

“We are so proud of Teri and her commitment to our league, both as a top skater and as our Charity Liaison,” said Megan “Megahurtz” Collum, ACRG Board President and Marketing & Public Relations Chair. “We felt Teri fit the bill perfectly as our Charity Liaison, given her participation with the MS Society’s many annual events and her work as a high school counselor. She is tuned in with the needs of our community and is always willing to go the extra mile, sometimes literally, to lend a helping hand.”

This isn’t the first time the ACRG has contributed to the MS Society, they also donated a portion of proceeds from ticket sales from the March Bout last season to Teri, in support of her participation in the BP MS 150 Houston to Austin Bike Tour last April. The league is again scheduled to donate a portion of proceeds from this season’s Championship Bout in September to the 2007 Valero MS 150 Bike to the Beach event in October.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society Lone Star Chapter

The Lone Star Chapter of the National MS Society, the largest Chapter in terms of geography, population and monies raised, was founded in 1955 with a mission to provide direct services to people affected by MS and to fund research in an effort to find a cure for the devastating effects of MS. Currently, $4.5 million is being spent on research at medical facilities throughout our Chapter. Our Chapter serves 141 counties in Texas and services an estimated 17,000 individuals with MS, their families and friends, the professionals who serve them, and the general public.
